Hefner's libertine worldview may have been overtaken by political correctness, but his impetus to explain his publication to his readers remains valid. Issue One of the LaiserinLetter promised regular introspection about our mission: who we are, what we cover, why we cover it, who it's for, and how to read it-a sort of "LaiseBoy (pronounced LazyBoy) Philosophy," if you will. This week we disclose our consulting and other business relationships in the industry we cover (a story best skipped by punctilious professors of journalism). Since the NASDAQ collapse of April 2000 blew holes in the idea of inevitable integration, software survivors have shifted to peddling mere parts of solutions. Is this a concession of defeat, or a shrewd backstep toward conquering the market? Rumor or Humor Few remember Soft Machine co-founder Robert Wyatt's musical "concept album," Ruth is Stranger than Richard, recently reissued, but originally released in 1975 (those who listened to this sort of thing in 1975 generally can't remember much of anything from those days Laiserin's LemmaTMFreudian Slips Sink Loose Ships (lemma: a short theorem used in proving a larger theorem) Last week's Lemma misquoted the title of the David Maister Classic, Managing the Professional Service Firm. With apologies to Professor Maister, I wrote "...Services Firm" instead of "...Service Firm." Mere semantics, you say? I say we in the designing professions focus too much on what WE do (deliver services) and not enough on what our CLIENTS want us to do (provide service). Worse, we misuse the available technology tools to crank out more services and less service. |
